When looking back at how TV dads were at the 1950s and now we'd see drastic change in how TV conveys the father's image, and that can reflect on how society views fathers in every generation.

When we first view TV fathers in the 50s we see that they, first of all, dressed a lot differently than they do now, and that signifies their time.

That is how the ideal American family was reflected in TV shows with it having the father as the head and the mother taking care the two or three children.

TV shows at this time show fathers as the leaders of the family, with their word being absolute and members of the family coming to the father to solve their problems. Popular TV shows at that generation like "leave to beaver", and "The Donna Reed show" show this image of the father figure.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9YKUuYMh0w

The best father figure i found was Ward Cleaver, with his calm and composed manner he had proved to be a great father and that shows with his children.

Fast forwarding to to the 21st century we see many changes in TV, one of which is that there's color now. We also see a change in the TV American family. The father role is shifted, with him being a symbolic head of the family but in fact the children rarely listen to him or obey him. It is usually portrayed in today's TV shows that the mother is the one who leads the family. Nowadays, the father figure is usually wrong or makes a lot of mistakes, like in "American Dad" or "Modern Family".

We see a huge difference between fathers then and now in a variety of factors.

Overall, this change in the role of the father figure shows how the TV American family has changed, and who knows maybe that reflects on the real family. Thank you.
